Biography

PRIVATE

Childhood

Matthias Weischer was born on January 15, 1973 in Elte in North Rhine-Westphalia. There he spent his childhood and youth.

Studies and “New Leipzig School”

In the Age of 22, Weischer began to study painting at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (HGB) in Leipzig. In 2000 he graduated with diploma and thereupon he became a master student of the artist Sighard Gille. He held this position till 2003.

During his years as a master student he was one of the founders of Produzentengalerie LIGA in Berlin which he founded with ten other former students of the HGB. Artists like Tim Eitel, Christoph Ruckhäberle, David Schnell, Tom Fabritius and Tilo Baumgärtel were part of this association. This gallery project helped the young artists to show their work in group and solo exhibitions. In 2004 they dissolved the project.

Often the term “New Leipzig School”(Neue Leipziger Schule) was used with reference to these artists. However, the diversely composed group of artists partly rejected this term. Numerous students of Sighard Gille and Arno Rink are included in this group, among others Neo Rauch.

Matthias Weischer had received several scholarships during his time with Sighard Gille. These included the scholarship Young Art at Kunsthaus in Essen in 2001 and the scholarship of Stiftung Kunstfond Bonn e.v. in 2002.

In 2005 Matthias Weischer was part of the artist programme Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative through which he spent a year as a protégé of David Hockney and learned a lot through this collaboration. Numerous solo exhibitions followed. In 2007 he received a scholarship from the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo.

Subsequent life

Matthias Weischer lives and works in his adopted home Leipzig. He is represented internationally through the galleries Eigen+Art Leipzig, Galerie König in Berlin and the Saatchi Gallery through which he became known worldwide.
