Biography

Born on the 25th of April 1941 in Reichenberg (today: Liberec), Bohemia, Markus Lüpertz is today one of the best-known contemporary German artists. Yet his career as an artist began with some difficulties.

At the age of seven, his family moved from their hometown to Rheydt in North Rhine-Westphalia. After his school career, he first began an apprenticeship with an illustrator of wine bottle labels. However, he was dismissed there on the grounds of a lack of talent. After discontinuing his apprenticeship with a commercial artist, he finally turned to studying at the Werkkunstschule Krefeld in 1956. Lüpertz studied there with Laurens Goosens, among others. He interrupted his studies to study at the Maria Laach monastery and to work in coal mining until 1961. In that year he transferred to the Düsseldorf Art Academy, from which, however, he was exmatriculated again after an altercation with a lecturer.

In 1962 Lüpertz fled to West Berlin to avoid being drafted to Algeria by the French Foreign Legion, where he had previously volunteered. This move is often associated with the beginning of his activity as a freelance artist. In Berlin, he was able to network with other contemporaries, such as Karl Horst Hödicke and Hans-Jürgen Diehl. In 1964 he became a co-founder of the gallery 'Großgörschen 35'. Together, the artists wanted to overcome the prevailing view of art. Only a year later Lüpertz left this artists' association again, which helped him to gain attention in the art world.

In 1970 he won the Villa Romana Prize and then lived in Florence for a year. Back in Germany, he organised the 1st Biennale in Berlin in 1974. From 1974 to 1988 he held various professorships at Germany's most renowned art academies, including the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. There he had a lasting influence on the direction of the academy as rector from 1988 to 2006. Today Lüpertz lives in Berlin, Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf and works as a lecturer at the Kunstakademie an der Alten Spinnerei in Kolbermoor.
