Biography

Eberhard Havekost was born in Dresden on October 12, 1967. After his Abitur, which he completed at the Kreuzschule, he initially began an apprenticeship as a stonemason in 1984, which he completed in 1985.

Shortly before the fall of the inner-German border in 1989, Havekost fled via Hungary to West Germany, where he lived in Frankfurt am Main. Two years later, he returned to his hometown Dresden, where he began studying fine arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in 1991. A year after graduating, he became a master student of the painter Ralf Kerbach. Two years later he received the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff scholarship. Numerous national as well as international exhibitions followed, which helped his work to become known worldwide.

Since 2010 he held the professorship for painting at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf. His works are now in the collections of renowned museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Collection in London. Eberhard Havekost passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52 on July 5, 2019. Until his death, he lived and worked in Berlin and Dresden.
