Basic data

Daniel Richter is a well-known contemporary artist from Germany.

Daniel Richter's artworks deal with art historical themes as well as current world events. The fascination with Richter's works lies in the unspoken, as everything remains merely a suggestion. The abstract paintings and works of his show the most diverse forms in an incredible abundance. Surfaces with sharp brushstrokes and colors that are brought to the canvas like a net. Many of his recent works increasingly address themes of German history as well as Christian themes.

Biography

Daniel Richter was born on December 18, 1962 in the East Holstein town of Eutin and grew up in the nearby town of Lütjenburg. He studied until 1995 at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg with Professor Werner Büttner, worked part-time as an assistant to the artist Albert Oehlen and also appeared as a designer of record covers for various punk rock bands. In 1995 he presented his first solo exhibition at the Contemporary Fine Arts gallery in Berlin. A few years later, further shows abroad followed.

While Daniel Richter initially devoted his work as a visual artist to abstract and color-intensive images, in the 2000s he increasingly resorted to figurative elements and, drawing on mass media, art history and pop culture, created quite unusual, expressive visual worlds.

In his most recent works, Richter has developed a new pictorial language, contrary to his own artistic routine, which attempts to elude the usual painting style and motifs, familiar themes and colors.

Daniel Richter taught at various art colleges in the 2000s. In 2004 he received, among other things, a professorship for painting at the Berlin Art Academy, which he ended prematurely because of various differences. In 2008 he then took on a guest professorship at the Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in New York.

Hailed as one of the most important painters of his generation, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, the 21er Haus in Vienna, and the Camden Arts Center in London dedicated a major retrospective to him in 2016/17. Today Richter lives and works in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna.
