Hans Hartung was a German-French artist who is considered one of the most important representatives of the European Informel movement. Hartung initially studied philosophy and art history until he began his studies at the University of the Arts in Leipzig and Dresden. Finally, he continued his education with Max Doerner in Munich.

After a hiatus from painting for several years, Hartung became one of the most important representatives of Informel. His artworks and editions in the non-objective style consist of a graphic tension-rich play of black lines and bundled color areas against light grounds. They are fleeting sign-like line compositions that express a deep expression of psychological sensitivity and, according to the artist's own statement, reflect mental states between euphoria and depression.

Hans Hartung is a painter of international standing. His artworks and editions are represented in museums and collections worldwide.
