Biography

Rosemarie Trockel was born in Schwerte on November 13, 1952. Although art played no role in her family, she began drawing at an early age. In 1971 she began studying to be a teacher at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Cologne until she decided to study painting at the Cologne Werkschulen with Werner Schriefers. The painter particularly appreciated the great collegiality as well as the open atmosphere at the school, which gave her plenty of room for artistic experimentation, she later explained.

With her friend and later gallery owner Monika Sprüth, she traveled several times to the United States, where she met artists such as Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer. She made "womanhood" the subject of her art and expressed her criticism of the existing patriarchal art business.

Since her first solo exhibition in the 1980s, her works have also received a great deal of attention in the USA. She has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. She made a name for herself in particular with her knitted pictures, with which she deliberately chose a medium that is connoted in society with "typical women's work" and through which she critically examines the attribution of gender roles.

In 1998 Trockel accepted a professorship at the renowned Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. In 1995 she is appointed to the Academy of Arts (Visual Arts Section) and later as a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In addition, the artist is a founding member of the Cologne Academy of the Arts of the World.

She caused a sensation during documenta X in Kassel with her House for Pigs and People, which she realized with fellow artist Carsten Höller. In 1999, she became the first woman to participate in the Venice Biennale.

Trockel now lives in Cologne-Hahnwald.
