Biography

Nan Golding was born in Washington, D.C. in 1953. After the suicide of her older sister, she left her parental home at the age of only 14. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and then moved to New York. Here she made her breakthrough as a photographer in the 1980s.

Thematically, the artist has been dealing with topics such as drugs, violence, death and sex since her early years. For decades she documented and portrayed acquaintances, friends and sometimes herself in intimate, personal and transgressive snapshots. At the same time, her works are also highly political. As a human rights activist, she advocates for the LGBTQI+ community and, since 2017, has co-founded the group PAIN (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now), which seeks to address the pharmaceutical company-induced opioid epidemic in the United States.

The artist has received numerous awards, including the Hasselblad Photography Award for outstanding achievement in photography (2007). Her work has been featured in major solo exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums. Today Goldin lives and works in New York and Paris.
