Biography

Leiko Ikemura was born on August 22, 1951 in Tsu (Mie Prefecture), Japan. At the age of 21, the young woman leaves her parental home to devote herself first to the study of Spanish literature at the Foreign Languages University in Osaka. For the deepening of her studies, she moved to Salamanca and Granada. From 1973 to 1978, Ikemura studied painting in Seville at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría (later part of the Universidad de Sevilla).

After graduating, the artist moved to Switzerland. Today, Ikemura describes this move as a great cultural and mental contrast. In Switzerland, she was quickly able to leave a lasting impression on the art scene and create the basis for her international career. She made her first public appearance with a solo exhibition in Bonn. Further exhibitions follow throughout Germany. She becomes a city artist in Nuremberg (1983-84), where she also creates her first sculptures. Then she moved her life and work center in the mid-1980s to Cologne.

In 1991 to 2015, the Japanese-Swiss painter followed an appointment as professor of painting at the University of the Arts. In 2014, she served as a professor in Japan at Joshibi University of Art and Design. The artist, who has received numerous honors and awards, now lives and works in Cologne and Berlin.

Leiko Ikemura works in a variety of media, such as painting, drawing, sculpture or even installations and photographs. In doing so, the artist sees herself in a very characteristic way as a "border crosser" between occidental and Japanese art and thus found her way to an unmistakable visual language. Her paintings are vivid and at the same time irritating, telling of struggles and conflicts or human dreams. "Imagination is the strongest force in my art," Ikemura once declared herself.
