Biography

Olaf Nicolai was born in 1962 in Halle an der Saale and grew up together with his brother, the well-known artist and musician Carsten Nicolai, in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz). He studied and earned a doctorate in German language and literature at the University of Leipzig. In the early 1990s, he exhibited his works for the first time in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He participated in documenta X as well as the 49th and 51st Venice Biennale and also received numerous prestigious awards. At the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Nicolai has been a professor of sculpture and fundamentals of three-dimensional design since 2011.

In his conceptual work, Olaf Nicolai illuminates processes of perception to evoke a new form of reception. In addition to classical, artistic techniques, he also integrates other activities of artistic production. In doing so, he primarily aims at the construction and exploration of new aesthetic contexts and reflects on the difference between artificiality and naturalness, between art and nature. In doing so, his mostly site-specific works often deal with temporal-political or cultural issues and address topics such as natural science, architecture, aesthetics, iconography, history and natural science.

Currently Olaf Nicolai lives and works in Berlin.
