Biography

Norbert Tadeusz was born in Dortmund on February 19, 1940. When his plans to become a stonemason failed, he first began an apprenticeship as a decorator at Hertie. There a graphic designer recognized his artistic talent and advised him to pursue this career. In 1960, Tadeusz was finally accepted at the Werkkunstschule in Dortmund with his submitted works and studied free painting there for a year with the abstract painter Gustav Deppe.

In 1961 he moved to the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf, which at that time was considered the "Mecca" of the abstract avant-garde. With academy teachers influenced by Art Informel, such as Gerhard Hoehme, Joseph Fassbender and Joseph Beuys, Tadeusz often found himself alone with his conception of art. Thus, contrary to all contemporary trends, he had devoted himself to figurative painting. During his training, he is said to have replied only to the sayings of his fellow students, including Richter, Polke, and Palermo: "I'm not an artist, I'm a painter!" This adherence to his own principles was to make him one of the most important representatives of figurative painting in the years that followed. Thus he did not allow himself to be carried away by the wave of abstraction and developed his own artistic style. In 1966 he finally finished his studies.

In the same year, one of his first exhibitions ended prematurely because his provocative depiction of female nudes was considered too offensive, and as a result the police stormed the exhibition. Since he was initially unable to celebrate any great success with his art, he pursued various smaller activities. He designed a carnival float for the Düsseldorf carnival parade or worked as a waiter before he could live from his paintings.

In 1970 Tadeusz lived for some time on the island of Elba in the Mediterranean. There he found in the Italian culture a source of inspiration for his work, which he used again and again later. His second stay in Italy in 1983 in Florence was to reinforce these influences. In addition to the clear references to the artists of the Italian Renaissance, he also quoted other old masters or modern contemporaries in his works.

Between 1973 and 1981 Norbert Tadeusz was a lecturer in painting and from 1981 to 1888 a professor at the State Academy of Art in Düsseldorf. In addition, his works were made accessible to a broad public in 1981 in a first large and important solo exhibition entitled 'Paintings 1960-1980' at the Museum am Ostwall. From 1988 to 1991 Tadeusz taught as a professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin and then moved to the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig until 2003.

He lived and worked in Castelnuovo d`Elsa (Italy) and in Düsseldorf, where he died on July 11, 2011. His wife, the painter Petra Lemmerz, has been managing his estate ever since.
