Biography

Henrik Eiben was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975 to German parents. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts and Design in Enschede (Netherlands) from 1992 to 2002, completed a semester abroad at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore (USA) in 2001, and continued his studies at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe (Germany) with Swiss artist Silvia Bächli from 2002 to 2004.

"My art is rather quiet, so it's not so intrusive. My goal is that people can see their own thing in my works. Art is food for the soul. I see my work maybe a bit like a thread woven into the time line of art history. There are no categories or differences" explains the artist 2019 in an interview with Thorsten Jantschek. Eiben's wall works, paintings, drawings and sculptures testify to a great sensitivity for forms and colors. He creates subtle and at the same time multi-layered works characterized by great combination and richness of variation, challenging the usual perceptual schemes of his viewer.

His artworks and editions are represented worldwide by galleries in Berlin, Cologne, Zurich and New York City. Instead of moving to one of Germany's major art centers, Eiben made a conscious decision to move to Hamburg, where the painter still lives and has his studio.
