Biography

The German artist Gabriela Jolowicz was born in Salzgitter in 1970. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, where she attended the illustration class of Volker Pfüller and Thomas M. Müller. In 2012, she graduated there as a master student. Between 2016 and 2020, the painter held a substitute professorship for etching and screen printing at the HGB Leipzig. Since 2019, she has been pursuing a teaching position for Project Letterpress at the Hochschule für Kunst in Bremen.

Gabriela Jolowicz primarily uses the slow medium of woodblock printing, as one of the oldest image reproduction methods, which allows her to filter ideas from a vast tangible flood of information. Her black and white depictions often show everyday life and come from online search engines or her own memory. The visual world unfolds kaleidoscopically for the viewer, blurring the lines between reality and fiction.

Jolowicz's work has been shown in many group and solo exhibitions. These include institutions such as the International Print Center New York, the Museo Nacional de la Estampa in Mexico City, and the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig. The artist lives and works in Berlin today.
