Biography

Elaine Sturtevant was born Elaine Heran in Lakewood, Ohio in 1924. She studied psychology at the University of Iowa and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1949. She moved to New York in the 1950s and began studying art at the Art Students League of New York.

In the 1960s, Sturtevant began to recreate works by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. Her repetitions were not simple copies. Rather, she reproduced the creative process that the original artist had gone through. Her goal was to challenge the concept of originality and the mechanisms of art production and reception.

Sturtevant received numerous awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Golden Lion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 for her lifetime achievement. In 2014, Sturtevant passed away at the age of 89.
